Hayden Michaels had given six years of her life to MyKell before he abruptly informs her that things hadn’t been “right” for a while and he had met someone else. That is when Hayden finally opens her eyes and takes a good look around at her life and the mess that she was—financially, emotionally and physically. Never able to maintain enough discipline to put her mind to any difficult task, Hayden makes a bold decision; she will throw away an entire year of her life; moving towards her goals with no thought of pleasure or pain. In this latest IR novel written by award winning author Pepper Pace, we are taken on a journey with Hayden as she tries to recreate herself with sometimes comical results. With the use of positive affirmations Hayden’s journey is a lesson to us all as she faces situations and people that help her to realize her worth—namely a man who has been written off by society. But the question becomes whether Hayden can accept the faults of someone else without allowing herself to fall back into her old ways? Warning this story contains explicit language, sex, and descriptions of drug use.

Reading this was necessary. Not because of the obvious love story between two broken people but because of the love story of a woman who needed to fall in love with herself. If this sounds like you, know that you can't love anyone and no one can love you enough if you can't love yourself first. I had often wondered if I kept reading these types of books because I really liked them or if I kept wishing they were about me. Honestly, I really wished they were my own story. I had already taken a page from PP's novel and had started my own "throwaway year" a few months ago. After you read this, you may want to do the same thing. Thank you Pepper for putting this year into words.Product details

The Throwaway Year Pepper Pace CeCe Monét Books Reviews
The Throwaway Year is very good and inspirational interracial romance that earned a rating of five stars. After Hayden's lover of six years broke up with her, she decides to take a year to work making herself be better, physically, financially and mentally. During her journey and processes, she meets and fall in love with an ex addict dealing with improving his self. I found this book inspirational and sweet the way they supported each other through their obstacles. I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to everyone who enjoys reading very good romance novels.
I think this should be required reading for anyone with self-esteem problem, no matter the ages. IMO, the affirmations got better and clearer as the story progressed. Ms PP just restores my faith that there are fantastic IR writers out there and it is not necessary to have sex in every two pages to create a story that holds a readers' interest.
I love this story because it was real--everyone has experienced some of what these characters went through; you recognize that chain smoking co-worker, that high/hungover guy in the cubicle next to you, and/or the messy one in this story. This storyline was fast-paced--nothing redundant, and I got my required HEA(I finished at 4am with a smile).
While this story has a lot of similarities between it and another of Ms Pace's novels, "Beast", (which is a book I ABSOLUTELY LOVE) this is still a unique read in itself. The characters' personalities are still quite different. Some of their circumstances are different as well.
If there was one thing that I do wish was more similar to "Beast" with this novel, it would be the length of the novel, as well as getting Brian's POV. I felt I missed out on a lot of really getting to know him. I wanted to hear his voice, see his reactions through his own words. Not just according to Hayden's POV. While these two have great chemistry together, & the places they are both at in their lives allows them to be open to one another, I still wish I could have gotten Brian's perspective as well, while these things unfolded. Not to belittle the growth of Hayden's character or the issues that she was fighting through, but Brian's issues not only affected him internally & externally, they affected people close to him greatly. A ripple effect of sorts. So I would have loved to see a broader scope with him, before witnessing he & Hayden coming full circle together.
If we would have gotten this then I would have gotten more time with them as well. I love these two together. They make me giddy...
And Brian just has this thing about him that leaves a chick like...
*winks* "How you doin?"
But I do so love their story. I love the pacing of this book & the message that it brings with it. It's not only realistic, but it's quite touching & erotically hot. And the ending was just beautiful. I couldn't put it down.
I would highly recommend this read. Keep it up Ms. Pace!
*Thumbs Up!*
As usual, this was another great book by Pepper Pace. Whenever I read her books, I always learn something new or take something away with me. Her book allows you to think and sometimes say "what if..."
Some people don't realize how truly awesome they are, until an event triggers some type of change and you have as Oprah would say, your "aha" moment. Hayden was just that person. She basically thought her life was worthless and didn't put much value on who she was until she got dumped by her deadbeat boyfriend of six years. The realization then hits home that she has to take charge of life. This means both internally and externally. She uses affirmations as a way to encourage herself in her daily journey and what a journey it was. Along the way she finds herself and falls in love with Brian, who was also seeking redemption. He was encouraging, loving, caring and continually uplifts her spirit.
Overall, this was a really great read, not as intense as some of her other stories but a great book if you're feeling desolate and need some encouragement. Bravo Ms. Pace, Bravo! I can't wait to see what next she'll write about.
.......is that they have to end--(. Despite the fact that I have read many of her books, I continue to be in awe of what an amazing writer she truly is!! I am forever searching for a new book by Ms. Pace and came across this one yesterday. From page one, I knew it was another 5 star book. This author has the extraordinary ability to take two people that make no sense together and turn them into the most amazing couple ever!!!!!! I absolutely loved Hayden and Brian! And I loved how accepting they were, especially Hayden, of each other's baggage. Only Pepper Pace could make me go from "Um.....I don't know about that" to "Okay - alright now!!!". This book was an absolute joy to read! And Ms. Pace's top spot on my list of the best IR Romance writers remains locked in! Now I'm back to impatiently waiting for her next story.......very impatiently-(
